Finailhof in the Schnalstal Valley

In the fall, the Schnalstal Valley bursts into a true riot of colors: golden larch trees, vibrant mountain slopes, and nestled among them, the deep-blue Vernagter Reservoir. This is exactly where a particularly beautiful fall hike for the whole family begins—up to the Finailhof.

The trail winds through the colorful mountain landscape, climbing a bit here and there and offering beautiful views of the lake. At the top, the Finailhof awaits with a cozy place to stop for a break and a view that definitely makes the climb worthwhile.

Let's head to Vernagt

From Tscherms, it’s about a 45-minute drive by car to Vernagt in the Schnalstal Valley. That’s where our hike to the Finailhof begins.

Even the drive to the Schnalstal Valley is beautiful—and once you arrive in Vernagt, the Vernagt Reservoir awaits, surrounded by colorful autumn hillsides.

Through the fall to the Finailhof

From Vernagt, the trail leads up to the Finailhof. We’ll hike for about 1.5 hours through the colorful autumn landscape. The trail climbs a bit here and there—but along the way, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of Lake Vernagter.

The hike is moderately difficult and family-friendly, though not suitable for strollers. For the little ones, you’re welcome to borrow a baby carrier from us.

It tastes best at the top

After the climb, a well-deserved break awaits you at the Finailhof. Here, you can relax, enjoy delicious South Tyrolean specialties, and let your gaze wander over the mountains and the Vernagter Reservoir.

Staying put for a while, eating something delicious, and enjoying the view—that’s exactly why a hike should have a destination. 😉

Downhill back to Vernagt

Well-fed, we head back to Vernagt along the same trail. The hike is a bit more relaxed on the way down—and along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the colorful fall scenery once again.

For the round trip, you should plan on about 3 hours of pure walking time, plus time for a stop for refreshments.

Vibrant fall colors, mountain air, lake views, and a cozy break at the Finailhof—that’s exactly what fall in South Tyrol feels like. 🍂
